Shopkit help

Prices, tax & GST

In Australia, GST is 10% and most retail prices are shown GST-inclusive. Shopkit is set up that way out of the box, so many stores never need to touch this. If you do, there are two settings that control tax.

Your default tax rate

Go to Settings → Checkout & payments and find the Tax section. Default tax rate (decimal) is entered as a decimal between 0 and 1 — Australian GST is 0.1000 (10%). This rate is used across your store, so leave it at 0.1000 unless you have a specific reason to change it.

Whether your prices include GST

This is set per sales channel under Settings → Channels, using the Prices include GST tick-box on each channel. Each channel shows its current setting as inc-GST or ex-GST.

  • Ticked (inc-GST) — the price you enter already contains GST. A shopper sees the same figure you typed, and Shopkit works the GST out from within it for your records. On a $110 inc-GST item, that's $10 GST. This is the usual choice for a public retail channel.
  • Unticked (ex-GST) — the price you enter excludes GST, and GST is added on top at checkout. A $100 ex-GST item becomes $110 at the till. This suits a B2B or wholesale channel, where trade buyers expect ex-GST pricing.

Because it's per channel, you can show tax-inclusive retail prices and tax-exclusive wholesale prices from the same catalogue. Product costs are always entered ex-GST regardless of this setting.

Are you registered for GST?

By default Shopkit treats your store as GST-registered, which is right for most businesses (you generally must register once your turnover reaches the ATO threshold). There isn't a self-serve switch for this in your settings yet, so if your business is not registered for GST and you'd like GST removed from your invoicing, open a ticket and we'll set it for you.

Once your tax settings are right, they apply automatically as you add products and take orders through your Stripe checkout.
