Organising your catalogue: categories & collections

Shopkit gives you two ways to organise your catalogue: categories and collections. They look similar, but they do different jobs.

Categories are the backbone of your catalogue — think Candles, Homewares, Kitchen. They can be nested (a category can have a parent category), so you can build a proper browse structure. A category can also carry a wholesale discount %, which feeds your wholesale pricing rules.

Collections are lighter, for merchandising — think New Arrivals, Sale, Staff Picks. They're a flat list with no parent, and each one has a Featured (appears on homepage) switch to spotlight it.

Create a category

Go to Categories → + New category. Give it a Name (the slug fills in automatically), and optionally a description, a parent category, a wholesale discount %, a sort order and SEO details. Save.

Add products to a category

You've got two ways:

  • On the category's own page, use Products in this category — type to search by name, SKU or slug, and click a product to add it. Click Remove to take one out.
  • On any product's edit page, use the Categories picker to tag it into one or more categories. See adding products.

A category won't delete while products are still in it — remove them first.

Create a collection

Go to Collections → + New collection. Set a Name, optional description, tick Featured if you want it on the homepage, set a sort order and SEO, then save.

Add products to a collection

Open the collection and use the Products in this collection panel — type to search by name, SKU or slug, and click a product to add it; click Remove to take one out. Add as many as you like. (As with categories, a collection won't delete while it still has products in it — clear them first.)

Unlike categories, products are added from the collection's own page — there's no collection picker on the product editor.

On the storefront

  • Every collection has its own page at /products?collection=, showing just that collection's products with its name and description at the top.
  • Tick Featured and — as soon as the collection holds at least one product — it appears in the Featured collections row on your homepage, linking shoppers straight to that page. (A featured collection with no products yet is simply hidden until you add some.)
  • Categories, meanwhile, drive the main browse: they show as filter chips on your Shop all products page and in the Shop by category grid on the homepage.

In short: use categories for how people browse your whole range, and collections for the curated groupings you want to feature and promote.
