If you engrave, embroider, print names or include a handwritten card, you can let customers type their text right on the product page. ShopKit keeps each customer's words with the item all the way from the cart to your order screen, so nothing gets lost or mixed up.
Turn it on for a product
Open the product under Products and scroll to the Personalisation section:
- Tick Let customers add their own text (engraving, embroidery, a gift message)
- Field label — what the customer sees, such as Engraving text or Name on the band. Leave it blank and it simply says Personalisation
- Maximum characters — how much physically fits. It starts at 40, which suits a keyring or tag
- Note under the field (optional) — a short instruction, such as Engraved exactly as typed, including capitals.
- Required — tick this if the item can't be sold without text
Save the product. The setting applies to all of its sizes and colours.
What customers see
A text box appears on the product page, just above the add-to-cart button, with a character counter. Customers are told straight away if their text is too long or contains emoji, which can't be engraved. Text is kept exactly as typed, capitals and punctuation included, on a single line.
Two of the same item with different text become two separate lines in the cart, so "Sam" and "Alex" never merge into one. The text is shown in the cart, at checkout, on the order confirmation and tax invoice emails, and in the customer's order history.
Working from the order
Open the order under Orders. Each personalised item has a highlighted box under it, headed with your field label and exactly as typed, showing the customer's words in a clear typeface so you can spot a double space or an l that should be a 1. Your label is saved with the order, so renaming the field later won't change older orders.
Good to know
- Personalisation is free to the customer. There's no separate charge for it, so include the cost of engraving in the product's price, or offer a personalised variant at a higher price.
- Quantity deals. A "buy N for $X" deal can't carry different text for each item. If personalisation is required, the product is sold one at a time with the text box, and its deals aren't offered.
- Reorders start blank. "Order again" doesn't copy last time's text. Items that require personalisation are left out with a note to add them from the product page; optional ones are added without text.
